Introducing two more of our supported riders, Peter and Jane Squires from Tadcaster, who compete at the national level in cross country. On their return to competitive riding following the pandemic, they had a lot to be happy with in the Cark It Midlands Series at Sherwood Pines. Jane was second Grand Vet Female and 18th female out of 30, over all classes, with consistent lap times. Peter, was the 17th Grand Vet Male out of 37 in class, having started right at the back and managing to get past an additional 11 veterans who started a minute before. Having retired, Peter and Jane were relieved to get back to cycling after a long break.
Sally
Sally Wright is one half of a husband-and-wife Enduro racing duo, competing – and securing podium finishes – in events such as the PMBA series. Husband Mat got her into mountain biking: on their second date, he borrowed a friend’s bike and they went to Dalby Forest. Sally works for Quorn and they both eat mainly vegan and vegetarian meals “Diet and nutrition are really important to me, but it’s definitely a learning process of finding out what works for you and your body as there is so much conflicting advice out there.” Her bike of choice is the Trek Remedy 8!
Mat
Mat Wright makes bespoke hand-made kitchens by day but on evenings and weekends, he can be found ripping up the trails and getting into shape for this year’s MTB Enduro races. Mat just loves being on a bike! Ever since he could walk, he has always had a bike of some description. He used to ride BMX and motocross, and always had an MTB in the garage. He wanted to race MTBs but there wasn’t really the opportunity when he was younger, however, a few years ago, he decided to try Enduro racing and won his first race. For the first two seasons, he was never lower than third place unless he had a mechanical and that got him hooked. He celebrated a new bike day in April picking up his pimped-up Trek Slash 8.
Zech is a coach for Dalby Forest Cycle Hub and our sister store Big Bear Bikes in Pickering, running the more technical courses like Back in Black and Drops and Jumps. He competed in the Open Men category of the Enduro World Series (EWS) and he’s just spent two weeks in the French and Swiss Alps, spending it every day on some of the best trails in Europe. He's visited places like Samoëns, Morzine, Le Carroz bike park and headed to the top of Flaine to see the sights of Mont Blanc. Zech also tackled the ridge line trail “Hauts-Forts”, peaking at 2466m and drawing applause from disbelieving French hikers.
